There's a lot happening at Vineyard {511}, Napa Valley and the world -- including this Newsletter -- which we plan to publish at least quarterly.

Napa Valley 2011 Vintage

In March, we released our 2011 Vineyard {511} Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon.  This is our third release since acquiring Vineyard {511} in 2008.  We are particularly proud of this vintage, given that 2011 was one of the most challenging years in Napa Valley since 1982.  Here's what Antonio Galloni, writing in Vinous, had to say: "The 2011 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons have turned out better than I expected.  It was a challenging vintage, but the best wines will surprise readers for their aromatic intensity, finesse, balance and sense of place.  Most importantly, 2011 is a beautiful vintage through which to discover what makes Napa Valley's best terroirs so compelling."

2011 Vineyard {511} Harvest

Vineyard {511} truly benefited from its Diamond Mountain District terroir in 2011. Although the growing season started late due to winter conditions lasting into spring, warm weather followed. With Vineyard {511}'s west-facing hillside and rocky white-ash soil, the vines were able to ripen, even with their slow start. The grapes were picked on October 26, 2011, as compared to earlier harvests for previous vintages, and ahead of the late October rains that ruined many harvests. While the growing season started late, it also finished late, so that the grapes not only had time to reach the desired sugar level, but also their ripeness.

We have tasted the 2011 VIneyard {511} Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon a number of times, and it is fast becoming our favorite.  Here are the details on this vintage -- probably more than some of you wanted to know:

Harvest: October 26, 2011, 25.6 °Bx, pH: 3.75

Fermentation: Open-top tank, 5-day cold soak, pressing at 5 ºBx, with finish in 4 new French oak barrels

Aging: 30 months in 100% French oak

Bottling: March 14, 2014, unfiltered and unfined

Production: 90 cases

Because of the limited 2011 production, we are unable to offer any discounts.  However, the best way to obtain our wines is to join our wine club, Encounter {511}, where members receive special pricing on both current releases and library wines. For more information...

Spring Has Definitely Sprung on Diamond Mountain

Bud break occurred in early March this year for Vineyard {511}, as late March is more typical.    Vineyards on the Napa Valley floor and in Sonoma saw bud break as early as February.  Our vineyard management crew has been busy prepping the vineyard for what promises to be another stellar vintage.

Springtime on Diamond Mountain

2012 is in the Bottle

Our 2012 vintage was bottled on March 12, 2015.  For this vintage we bottled a limited number of large format, etched bottles (3 liter).  These will be available initially to wine club members when we release the 2012 vintage in March, 2016.

Cheers,

Ed and Irene Ojdana

Vineyard Pets

Dogs are popular vineyard pets -- there's even a book highlighting some of Napa Valley's famous vineyard dogs.  In the case of Vineyard {511}, our vineyard pet is a no-name peacock.  Any sugestions for a name?
