Greetings from Diamond Mountain!
This fall we find ourselves excited about our 2017
harvest and, at the same time, our hearts are
saddened at the devastation caused by the
unprecedented fires in Sonoma and Napa counties. We
are incredibly thankful that we are safe and that
our home and vineyard were unaffected. We are truly
grateful to the heroic efforts of firefighters and
first responders from all over the country, who
helped protect us. Although our community will be
feeling the effects of these fires for some time, we
are strong and already helping each other rebuild,
one step at a time.
Here’s how you can help:
Give
back!
Visit the Napa
Valley Community Foundation to learn more
about how to give assistance through the Napa Valley
Disaster Relief Fund.
Come
visit!
Plan a visit to wine country and help support our
community. The smoke has cleared… wineries, hotels,
and restaurants are open… and the Valley is as
beautiful as ever.
Buy
Napa and Sonoma wines!
Keep buying wines from all your favorite Napa and
Sonoma wineries, online, in stores and in
restaurants. Share them with friends and family--these
are some of the best ways you'll help us rebuild our
beautiful wine country!
Cheers,
Ed and Irene Ojdana

Vineyard
{511} Carneros Chardonnay
The first release of our Vineyard {511} Chardonnay
was extremely popular and, just as it sold out in
late September, we released the 2016 vintage! This
is again a small-production wine that is available
exclusively to our wine club members.

July and August brought the beautiful colors of
veraison, the onset of ripening when the grapes grow
in size, their color changes from green to purple,
and their hard berries soften as they gain sugars.
With temperatures soaring over 100 degrees for weeks
in August and September, we harvested our Cabernet
Sauvignon on Diamond Mountain earlier in the season
than expected--on September 28. Under night lights,
our vineyards were aflurry with activity from 4am to
10 am. (The prime time to begin harvest is 4 am,
when berry temperature has cooled down to around 65
degrees.)
Harvest is the time when nature and wine-making
skills--yield and quality--converge to honor what
growers have been working towards all year
long--bringing the fruit to the crushpad.

University
of Notre Dame 175th Anniversary Box Set
To celebrate the 175th anniversary of the University
of Notre Dame’s founding, it unveiled a collection
of high-quality wines, all made by vintners in the
Notre Dame family. Vineyard {511} was honored to be
selected to be included in this offering and, Ed an
alumni (or “domer”), is especially proud.

Sun
Valley Center for the Arts Wine Auction
For the second year in a row, Ed and I participated
in the Sun Valley Wine Auction in Idaho. The
three-day-long program is an annual
fundraising event for the Sun Valley Center for the
Arts; proceeds from the Wine Auction make up 50% of
the Center's budget and directly support programs in
art education.
